The 2:1 aspect ratio is exactly twice as wide as it is tall. Vittorio Storaro promoted it as "Univisium," a compromise between cinema and television, and streaming productions adopted it widely — a lot of Netflix originals are shot 2:1. It is also the workhorse ratio for web banners and social headers, where you need width without eating vertical space.

It is cinematographer Vittorio Storaro's name for 2:1, proposed as a truce between cinema's 2.39:1 and television's 16:9. Neither side has to letterbox much. Streaming picked it up because the same master looks reasonable on a TV and a phone.
