Is 5:4 the same as 8x10?

Yes. 8x10 simplifies to 4:5 in portrait, and 10x8 is 5:4 in landscape. Same shape, different orientation — which is why an 8x10 frame takes a 4:5 photo perfectly.

Why was 1280x1024 so common if it is not 4:3?

It is a genuine oddity. Most CRTs of that era were 4:3, but 1280x1024 is 5:4, so images were subtly stretched on many setups. It survived because the resolution was convenient in memory terms, not because the shape made sense.

How much do I lose cropping 3:2 to 5:4?

About 17% off the long edge. This is the classic frustration of printing DSLR shots at 8x10 — the camera gives you 3:2 and the frame wants 5:4. Crop it yourself so you choose what goes, rather than letting the print lab center-crop.

What resolution do I need for an 8x10 print?

2400x3000 pixels at 300 DPI. At 200 DPI you would need 1600x2000, which is still acceptable for a print you hold at arm's length. Below that, fine detail starts to mush.

Is 5:4 a good ratio for photographs?

It is a quiet, formal shape — close enough to square to feel composed, wide enough not to feel cramped. Large-format photographers have used it for a century. It suits still life and portraiture far better than sweeping landscapes.
