Instagram accepts more shapes than most people realise, and it silently crops anything that falls outside them. The feed takes three ratios, Stories and Reels take a fourth, and your profile picture is a fifth. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a photo looks fine in your camera roll and wrong once posted.

4:5 portrait, in most cases. It is the tallest shape the feed allows, so it occupies more screen than square or landscape and gives people longer to stop scrolling. Use 1:1 instead when the same asset also has to serve as a product thumbnail somewhere else.
1080x1350 for portrait, 1080x1080 for square, 1080x566 for landscape. The width is always 1080 — that is the resolution Instagram renders at, and going higher just means heavier compression on the way in.
Because they fall outside the ratios it supports. Anything taller than 4:5 or wider than 1.91:1 gets trimmed to fit, and Instagram centre-crops by default, which is rarely where you would have cut. Resize before you upload and you keep the decision.
